Balancing the Life-Work relationship

Are you a full-time college student while also trying to manage a part-time job? Life can definitely feel overwhelming but it's important to remember that everything is possible. A study from the National Center for Education Statistics showed that the percentage of part-time students who had a job was lower in 2020 (74 percent) than the students in 2015 (78 percent). Being able to manage a work life and school can be hard but here are some tips on knowing how to balance it all.

I can relate to having to juggle different things in life, I’m currently a Western athlete, work part-time as a cosmetologist, currently working on an elementary degree, and now writing for the college blog. Throughout all the chaos I strive to keep pushing in life. Here are three tips to help balance work-life-school.

1. SET A DEDICATED TIME FOR SCHOOL

Most people who have families and a job most likely put those priorities first, although while I agree, I also believe that in order to be successful in school one must make time for school. Having a set time every day where schoolwork can be done is crucial to not getting behind in classes. Taking online classes can be beneficial for those who have a life outside of school. However, having online classes also comes with having to be responsible for your own schedule, as you have no one to tell you when to do your assignments.

2. HAVE OUTSIDE SUPPORT

Having a good support system is key when it comes to balancing work, life and school. For instance, you might be stressed out because you have a chemistry test coming up that you haven't studied for. Perhaps you can ask a friend/family member if they can watch your kid/kids while you study. Being able to have a good connection with your work manager is also crucial so they know if they need to adjust your work schedule in any way.

3. HAVE TIME FOR YOURSELF

Throughout all the chaos and stress, remember that in order to be successful one must take care of themselves. For instance, if one tries to do all their homework in one day and doesn't take time to drink water, they are dehydrating themselves which can lead to fatigue. This prevents them from being able to give 100% on their assignments. Knowing how to properly take care of yourself is the most important thing, this will help everything else follow along seamlessly.

I know that life can feel overwhelming at times, but it's important to remember to look at life as a blessing. As one of my coaches likes to say, try to change your mindset from “I have to do this” to “I get to do this”. I’ve found that when I approach my responsibilities this way, even the hardest days feel a little lighter. So, when life feels like too much, take a step back and remind yourself- each challenge is also an opportunity, and every responsibility is a chance to grow.
