Do you ever catch yourself feeling homesick? That is totally normal and a part of the college experience. Here are 10 steps that could potentially help in relieving some of those feelings.

  1. Try to keep yourself busy

Whenever you start to feel homesick do things that will keep you busy. For example, as soon as you are done with a task try doing a new task shortly after. Get involved in your school activities. Always be on the move.

  1. Make new friends

Whether you are in a club or sport or simply just taking classes, try meeting new people. Being able to make good new friendships will help make the college experience one to remember.

  1. Call family/friends back home

Whether you are walking to your next class or eating at Mitchells here at Western try making a phone call. This will help you feel like you are still a part of your hometown.

  1. Create a cozy dorm room

Creating a cozy space will not only help you stay organized but will also help you feel at ease. Try decorating your dorm room with pictures and things you love from back home.

  1. Find support

It is important to remember that you are not alone and that you can speak to someone. Reach out for support, try talking to your school counselor or anyone that you trust.

  1. Visit home

Here at Western we are fortunate to be able to be close to surrounding areas like Utah, Colorado, and Idaho. Try visiting home whenever you get the chance. Remember you will be back home before you know it!

  1. Avoid Social Media

I know this one is hard, however, the more you stay off social media the more you will be active in the present. Social media might make you miss your hometown seeing what everyone is up to. Enjoy your college experience before you graduate!

  1. Self – care

Do something for yourself; you deserve it! Try booking a massage, go relax at the sauna, spend time in nature. Do something that will help your body and mind relax.

  1. Journal

If you have a spare notebook and pen on hand, try journaling! This is a form of self-care, whenever you feel like you have a lot on your mind just write your feelings down.

  1. Follow a routine

Whether you had a routine back home or not, creating one can help you stay organized. If you had a routine that you used to follow, try continuing that routine. Have set times for studying, meals, and relaxation.
