Food Away From Home
When students come to Western Wyoming Community College and are living in the dorms, one of the biggest things that students are missing is home made food, food that brings comfort. When I was a freshman and living in a dorm for the first time, being homesick was the worst thing I had experienced, and most of that came from missing the food that my parents made. I’ve noticed that when you’re struggling to do well in school, sometimes the answer is having that comfort food that makes you feel good and reminds you of home.
Thankfully for us, Western Wyoming has Mitchell’s. Even though Mitchell’s is small, the quality of the food is amazing, the staff love working with students and making sure that if there is any dietary restrictions that they are met whenever that student comes in. On Thursday last week, I interviewed a student who wished to stay anonymous, and asked what about Mitchell’s they like and why they keep going, and they said, “I like coming to Mitchell’s because it’s a nice place for me and my boyfriend to get food together and also because the food is really awesome and it is nice and easy.”
Mitchell’s is also a great place for students to go where they can eat meals with friends. I’ve noticed whenever I’m in there that the sports teams such as basketball, wrestling, soccer, and volleyball, they all come in and eat as a team, and when I see that it definitely shows that when you eat as a team, you are creating a connection with the people you’re playing with everyday. When students come in, you are welcomed by the small team that is working all shifts. They try their best to make each student feel seen by learning everyone's names, taking in suggestions about what meals they should make, and most importantly make sure that dietary restrictions can be met.
If there is a meal that you hope to see in the future, there is a white board near the dish drop-off that you can write comments about the meal that you had and a spot where you can suggest a meal for them to make in the future, or you can talk to one of the chefs while you’re in line getting your food. Their goal is to make Western Wyoming Community College feel like a home away from home.
