“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don't wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” – Barack Obama

If you are a part of programs that require you to volunteer in the community or you’re just looking to add to your list of helping the community out, there are plenty of ways for you and your friends to volunteer in Rock Springs and Green River. So why do community service if you don’t have anything to work towards? Well, there are a lot of reasons why you would want to go out into the community and help such as:

  • Career Experience: Depending on where you do your volunteering at, they all give you different and valuable skills that can be applied into your everyday life. One the biggest skills that I’ve picked up while doing community service was how to be professional when working with people, you’re building strong communication skills just by going out and asking if there is anything that you can help with.
  • New Connections: When you go out, especially on days where it’s an advertised volunteer day, you can meet new people who are obviously interested in similar things. You also build connections with the people that you’re volunteering for, and if you’re ever looking for a job in the future, whether it be with the person that you volunteered for or for another company, the person and organization you volunteered for is more likely to be someone that will be willing to speak well about you if you use them as a reference.
  • Sense of Purpose: Sometimes when you’re feeling low and don’t want to be stuck in your room all day, going out and volunteering is a great way to help with how you’re feeling, and knowing that you made an impact on someone. Even if it’s not that big of an impact, you still did something to help and that can make you feel good about yourself.

So where locally can you go to help volunteer? Some of the locations where you can volunteer can be at the Red Desert Humane Society, the Young at Heart Senior Center, Greater Wyoming Big Brother Big Sisters, Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, the Food Bank of Sweetwater County, Ray Lovato Recycling Center, and so much more. There is nothing wrong with volunteering and helping, it will only keep benefiting everyone, including yourself in the long run.
