Overcoming Fear: Trying to Graduate

“It's good to be challenged, to keep moving forward, and keep being inspired and scared. I feel like, if you're not afraid of something, you shouldn't do it. If you're just coasting through things, what's the point? You're not learning.” - Nina Dobrev

As the semester is getting closer and closer to the end, classes are starting to put on more stress, packing in all the information that they think their students should walk away with, but there’s more to that dreadful feeling. As a student who is trying to graduate in the Spring, the importance of making sure that I pass all my classes this semester, to guarantee myself smooth sailing for the Spring semester, is putting a lot of weight on my shoulders. I’ve noticed that the further into the semester you get, the harder it becomes for any student to really find the time to do what they want outside of classes, work, and homework.

While I may have talked with my advisor, and he let me know that I am on the track to graduating in the Spring, I still worry that I might start to fall more and more behind in my classes. I remembered when I was sitting on bed, trying to not freak out about an assignment, that no matter what, fear is what drives everyone forward. Fear is one of those things that you can have two responses to it: ‘Fight or Flight’. In this sense with fear, we’re not in immediate danger, yet we still have the feelings, so what are we doing with these feelings? ‘Flight’ in this sense is when you are given something in your pathway and you feel like you can’t grow, you can’t get out of the mess of getting through your assignments or the class as a whole, so you decide to almost give up and just hope that you come across something this is slightly easier for you.

‘Fight’ in this is the feeling of still being scared that you might mess up and the fight was all for nothing, but you know that you put in so much time in effort, reaching out to people for help and being determined to finish the semester with this class, even if it feels nearly impossible to do, you still got to fight your way through, even if it’s with a “C” in the class.

Don’t feel discouraged about what you’re getting yourself into, reach out to classmates and even your professors during this final stretch of the semester, as you’re not alone in any of this.
