Fredann Soto is in her first season as Head Coach for the Mustangs. Fredann has played volleyball for 37
years, playing in her first tournament at age 8. A Rock Springs native, she played at Rock Springs High School, and
was named to the All-Conference, and All-State teams, along with being named to the Wyoming All-Star team in 1991 and
1992. She earned honors as best hitter with a .347 and .364 hitting percentage in her junior and senior years
respectfully, was named Who's Who in Wyoming and American High School Sports in 1992.
Fredann played collegiate volleyball at Casper College where she remains ranked #10 in a single season with 232
blocks. Although she had many offers to play on after Casper, she decided to get involved in coaching and teaching.
She has coached for 24 years at the junior high, high school, and club levels.
Fredann's parents are WWCC alum, with her mother, Janis Collins-Hutton being a member of the first volleyball team at
Western, and her father, Fred Hutton being a member of the basketball team coached by Ken Rochlitz, at which time they
were the Spartans of Western Wyoming College.
Fredann is married to Mario Soto, and they have 2 children; Erikka is attending Eastern Washington University, and
Alex is a Mustang sophomore.
Assistant Volleyball Coach
Dani Torpey joins the Mustang Family this year as an Assistant Coach. Dani is a native of
Rock Springs and attended Rock Springs High School graduating in 2012. During her high school
career, she started as a varsity player as a sophomore, played for a state title as a junior
and was selected co-captain of her team as well as earning All-Conference and All State honors
for her junior and senior years. Dani was select as co-captain of her Elite traveling team
with the Intermountain Volleyball Association. She was selected to play from a pool of
Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Montana players. Her Elite Team played in the USVA International
tournament in the summer between her junior and senior years where they competed against New
Zealand, China and the Dominican Republic, as well as other teams. During her senior year,
Dani committed to playing volleyball at Black Hills State University, a Division II NCAA
school competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, in Spearfish, South Dakota.
During her time at BHSU, Dani received multiple selections to All Tournament teams across the
mountain west region. She was also chosen as RMAC All Conference. Dani was also a member of
the RMAC Student Advisory Council and did community service for Make-A-Wish, Special Olympics,
and local pet shelters. While attending BHSU, Dani earned her degree in Secondary Education
and currently teaches for Sweetwater School District #1 as an English teacher.
Dani loves the outdoors and spends her free time with family, reading, traveling, hiking,
camping, fly-fishing and going on many adventures with her adventure dog and best friend,
Assistant Volleyball Coach
Jake Harris is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the Mustangs. Harris has
been teaching Physical Activity classes at Western for the past few years. He has a masters
degree in Human Performance and Physical Education (including studying Sports Psychology,
Coaching Pedagogy, etc.). He had internships in coaching/athletics with Adams State University
and Otero Junior College. He moved here five years ago with his wife and three children. They
love calling Rock Springs home.
