Human and Public Service

Helping people and changing lives is one of the most rewarding aspects of any career. Criminal Justice, Education, Social Sciences, and Psychology are all careers that continue to be in demand and will prepare you for dynamic and rewarding professions.

Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice Professionals work to maintain a society that is safe, fair, and free for its citizens every day. They change lives by upholding our laws and securing our lands while at the same time, keeping our neighborhoods and communities safe. One of the strengths of Western’s Criminal Justice Department is that all criminal justice courses offered are instructed by professionals who work, or have worked in the various fields of the criminal justice system. The impact of this is that our educators provide real-life learning through personal experience and into the classroom as they prepare our students for their chosen roles in the field.

Education

The Education Department at Western Wyoming Community College provides programs and classes for students interested in a teaching career. We offer students three program options: Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Teacher Preparation. All programs are offered on campus or online. One of the strengths the Education Department offers is that Western provides students the opportunity to participate in preschool and/or public-school classroom activities as a practicum student. This will give you the confidence you need to walk into a classroom and get started!

Psychology

Psychology is a dynamic discipline that can lead to rewarding careers in mental health services, teaching, counseling, and research. Psychologists study cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behavior by observing, interpreting, and recording how individuals relate to one another and to their environments. They use their findings to help improve processes and behaviors.  The Psychology Associate of Arts degree is intended for students interested in teaching, medicine, law, social work, business, or in human services such as mental health, nursing, child care, and criminal justice. It is also designed for transfer to university programs in psychology.

Social Sciences

The Social Science are a collection of disciplines that study and work with societies and the relationships of individuals within societies. The Departments of Anthropology, History, Political Science, Sociology, and Social Work provide students with the opportunity to study human behavior from a variety of different perspectives and prepare for a variety of professions. Emphasizing both empirical research and applied studies, these departments give students the opportunity for both classroom learning as well as hand-on experiences, such as internships and actual research opportunities under the mentorship of faculty members.
