Nursing Assistant

The School of Health Sciences offers a nursing assistant course which has a mandatory clinical component. The student must fulfill the clinical requirements in order to attend clinical. The student will need to provide the instructor proof of meeting these requirements within the first week of class.  See the Course Catalog for course description. 

Vaccinations: An annual TB skin test or Quantiferon blood test, Tdap vaccine, Varicella vaccine, Hepatitis B vaccine, COVID-19 vaccine (recommended), Influenza vaccine (if in Flu Season) and MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine or proof of immunity must be completed  prior to the course. 

CPR: Students must have a valid CPR certification - American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider

Western follows the requirements established by our clinical partners, as well as Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and recommendations for immunizations for healthcare providers.

It is the sole responsibility of the Wyoming State Board of Nursing (WSBN) to determine if a person is eligible for licensure or certification. If any of the following scenarios apply to the student, they will be required to supply additional information to the WSBN and possibly be denied certification.

Criminal Background Checks FAQs 

  1. Disciplinary action taken by a licensing (nursing or regulatory) agency.
  2. Denied nursing licensure/certification.
  3. Investigated for charges of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property.
  4. History of a physical or mental disability which may make you unable to practice nursing or perform duties with reasonable skill and safety.
  5. Drug or alcohol abuse.
  6. Terminated from a job for use of alcohol or any controlled substance.
  7. Arrested for an alcohol or drug related offense.
  8. Convicted, pled guilty or not guilty, or have charges pending for any crime including felonies, misdemeanors, and municipal ordinances, including military violations and driving under the influence.

The WSBN requires an official background check of all applicants. Applicants will not be denied the opportunity to take the competency examination for Nursing Assistant, Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse: however, the WSBN may deny certification or licensure based on history revealed through the background check and history information.
