Western Hosts 2021 Academic Challenge

Western Wyoming Community College hosted the 2021 Wyoming Academic Challenge (WAC) on October 2.  

The Challenge is the first event in a series for the 2021-2022 school year. The contests are designed to provide Wyoming high schools with a regular season of academic competition ending with a state tournament.  

Awards are given to the top three schools as well as the top small school (250 or fewer enrollments) at each competition. To compete in the state tournament, each high school must qualify at one of the regional contests. Each member of the winning team was awarded a scholarship of one year of tuition to Western Wyoming Community College. 

1st Place Winners: Douglas High School 

  • Team Members: Greta Thrasher (Grade 12), Hannah Reed (Grade 10), and Liam Cobb (Grade 10) 

2nd Place Winners: Greybull High School  

  • Team Members: Catcher Russell (Grade 11), Edith Aguilar (Grade 12), Maliyah Porras (Grade 12) Grainger Russell (Grade 9) 

3rd Place Winners: Pine Bluffs High School 

  • Team 1 Members: Marisol Garcia (Grade 12), Taylor McCollum (Grade 10), Jasmin Garcia (Grade 10), Merina Theobald (Grade 9) 

“Western was excited to be able to host this year's Wyoming Academic Challenge event this last Saturday on our Rock Springs campus. It is always encouraging to see Wyoming's up-and-coming academic leaders, and to be able to acknowledge the first-place winning team with scholarships to Western Wyoming Community College, once they have graduated from high school,” stated Dr. Clifford Wittstruck, Vice President for Student Learning at Western.  

Western’s Student Learning Office hosted the event, the following faculty and staff members volunteered to help as readers, timekeepers, and scorers; Kendra Meeker, Instructor of Plant Operations; Michelle Gatti, Executive Assistant to the VP for Student Learning; Matt Henley, Instructor for CDL Training; Cherie Fletcher-Stephenson, Psychology Adjunct Faculty.
