Western Helps Students Go from Layoffs to Dream Jobs

In today’s economy and COVID-19 pandemic, the transition from a layoff to a new career often happens through the classroom.

Western Wyoming Community College strives to provide learning and career opportunities for people from all walks of life. With the help of CARES funding from Governor Gordon’s office, Western has distributed a total of $1,249,175 to 479 students, to date. These funds have been instrumental in allowing recipients to follow their dreams of attending college.

For many people, COVID-19 layoffs forced them to a crossroads with tough decisions about their futures and the futures of their families. Western is proud to be a part of the solution for those who bravely chose to enroll in college.

Community college graduates have higher earning power than those with a high school education or less. Western provides a cost-effective way for people to attain a higher education and earn more money for themselves and their families. Community college graduates also bring value to the local and state economy which correlates directly with low unemployment, higher quality of life and a less costly society.

Western has degrees and certificates that appeal to adults who need new skills, or those looking to improve their knowledge about a field where they are already employed. In addition to an array of industry partnerships for students who are looking to go directly back to the workforce, Western also has the FastTrack Business Degree which is a self-paced online degree program, and many other programs to fit students’ needs.

“If it weren't for the CARES Wyoming College Grant funding I would most likely not have been able to attend school this year. Having been laid off after more than 20 years in the workforce I needed to make a change and school was what I wanted to do.  The CARES Wyoming College Grant funding gave me the funding needed to purchase books and pay part of my tuition,” stated Shenna Johnston.

“My advisors at Western have helped me get on track to complete my degree in accounting, and get back to the workforce in a field I’m extremely excited about. I am beyond thankful and am excited for the future that CARES Wyoming College Grant has attributed to,” said Johnston.

The deadline to apply for CARES grants is October 26, 2020. There are two types of CARES grant funds available. The CARES Wyoming Adult Grant and the CARES Wyoming College grant. Both grants aim to help those impacted by COVID-19 cover some of the costs for attending college. Visit www.westernwyoming.edu/aid to apply today.
